We spent a day in a derelict assembly hall outside Sheffield with florists, ladders and every instrument we own. The brief to the photographer was one line — what would this room look like if the music kept growing after we left — and the answer is the picture above: bows in leaf, a bassoon in full flower, and eight players trying to keep a straight face.
Hothouse opens in Barcelona this autumn with the first three of Ilse Deme's Hothouse Songs. The full cycle — five composers, one commission each, all on the same question of growth and ruin — runs through next season.
